West Indies Makes History, Beat Australia at Gabba

Ā West Indies shook the cricket world with its historic win against Australia in the second and final test at Gabba. The Caribbeans managed to beat the Australian Cricket team by 8 runs in the match held from 25-29 January. This marks the team’s triumph on Australian soil after 27 years. West Indiesā€™ last win against Australia came in 1997. While the world was watching Indiaā€™s rarest of rare defeats against England at home, the men from the Caribbean pulled off one of the biggest upsets in cricket history by beating the host at their strongest fort.Ā 

The match witnessed some incredible bowling and batting performances. West Indian bowler Shamar Joseph crushed the opposition with his match-winning spell in the second inning. Joseph took a total of 7 wickets in 11.5 overs with an injured toe to mark their triumph over the Kangaroos.

This match was a series decider which started with West Indies posting 311 in 108 overs in the first inning. On the other hand, Australia declared their innings at 289-9 in 53 overs. In the second innings, the visitors were able to score 193 after Kirk McKenzieā€™s 41 and Alick Athnazeā€™s 35. Australian batter Steve Smith had the best performance in the second innings with a 91-run tally; however, he ran out of partners on day 4 of the match. West Indiesā€™ Shamar Joseph was named the man of the match for this series decider.Ā

This match helped the West Indies break many records. The West Indies broke Australiaā€™s 11-game unbeaten streak in the pink-ball format. This win also marked West Indiesā€™ first win against the Kangaroos in 27 years. Moreover, West Indies became the first team to defeat Australia in a day-and-night test match. Also, the last time West Indies defeated Australia, they set the record for the biggest run chase ever at 418.Ā 

The cricket world has accepted this win with grace and showered the men from the Caribbean with praises and appreciation. Right after the commencement of the match, a video surfaced showing Brian Lara celebrating the victory along with Australian legend Adam Gilchrist with teary eyes, and Gilchrist is trying to embrace it by hugging him.
