By Ask ten golf fans to name the best golfers ever, or the best ever golfer, period. And you’ll probably get ten slightly different answers.
One person will point to Tiger Woods. Another will immediately say, Jack Nicklaus. Someone else will bring up Ben Hogan or Bobby Jones, and there’s always that one person who reminds everyone, “golf looked very different 70 or 80 years ago.”
That’s what makes the debate so interesting.
No single number settles it. Major wins matter, but so does dominance. Longevity matters too. And then there’s the simple question of what a player looked like when everything was clicking.
With that in mind, here’s our take on the best golfers in the world.
Tiger Woods
For us, Tiger still gets the top spot among the best golfers.
Not because he has the most major championships. He doesn’t. Jack has 18, and Tiger has 15.
It’s because of the level Tiger reached when he was at his best. He was a god who couldn’t do wrong.
His 1997 Masters victory came by 12 shots. At the 2000 U.S. Open, he won by 15. He went through periods where winning didn’t seem to be the goal. The goal was simply making the rest of the field feel like they had no chance.
Woods finished his PGA Tour career with 82 wins, tying Snead for the record, along with 15 majors.
He also held all four major championships at the same time in 2000 and 2001, creating what became known as the “Tiger Slam.”
That’s the thing we keep coming back to. Plenty of golfers have had brilliant careers. Very few have ever made professional golf look as completely under control as Tiger did during his peak. He made it look easy, like he was playing the game in the lowest difficulty preset.
Jack Nicklaus
Then there’s Jack Nicklaus. If you want the safest answer to “Who is one of the best golfers?” Nicklaus is probably it. At least for the old golf heads.
He won 18 major championships and finished second another 19 times. He won his first major in 1962, and his last came at the 1986 Masters, when he was 46.
That span tells you almost everything.
Nicklaus wasn’t dependent on one hot season. He stayed relevant for decades. His six Masters victories are also a record, and Augusta became almost like a second home for him.
Sam Snead
Sam Snead’s career numbers are difficult to ignore and that makes him one of the best golfers ever.
He might not be a household name, but his 82 wins on the PGA Tour make him a big name in golf circles, which ties him with Tiger Woods for the all-time record. Even Sam also picked up seven major championships and stayed competitive for decades, which is no small thing in this sport.
His swings were as smooth as a hot knife through butter, almost effortless to watch. But don’t let that fool you, his game was rough & tough as it gets, and that’s really what puts him in the conversation as one of the greatest ever.
There’s one thing missing from his résumé, though, and it sticks out. The U.S. Open. He came close four times, finishing runner-up, but could never close it out. It’s one of those things an athlete, however good they may be, is not able to achieve.
Still, 82 wins is 82 wins. Gap or no gap, that number alone puts him up there with the best to ever play the game.
Ben Hogan
If you ask the best golfers about the greatest ball striker ever, Ben Hogan’s name is going to come up quickly. His golf club game was legendary.
Hogan won nine majors and 64 PGA Tour events. But his story becomes even more impressive when you look beyond the numbers. Because whether you see it in the papers or not, perseverance and the ability to
A serious car accident in 1949 left Hogan badly injured. Many people would have finished as professional athletes. Hogan wasn’t.
He returned to competitive golf and went on to win six more majors, including the 1953 Open Championship.
His control, discipline and obsession with improving his swing made him one of the most technically fascinating players the game has ever produced.
Arnold Palmer
Arnold Palmer had something you can’t really measure with a stat. People simply wanted to watch him.
Palmer won 62 times on the PGA Tour and seven major championships, but his popularity went far beyond his tournament results. His aggressive style and willingness to take on risky shots made him exciting to watch and helped make him one of the best golfers.
He also helped bring a lot of new eyes to the sport of Golf.
The Eternal Swing
At the end of the day, nobody’s ever going to agree on who the best golfers of all time really are. Maybe you go by Nicklaus and his major count that nobody’s touched. Maybe it’s Tiger and how terrifying he was at his peak. Maybe it’s Hogan coming back from a car crash that should’ve ended him, or the way guys like Snead and Palmer left their mark on the game beyond just their scorecards. Every one of them has a real argument.
And honestly, that’s kind of the point. These careers aren’t here to settle anything — they’re just a reminder of why golf still grabs people’s attention the way it does. Different eras, different swings, different roads to the top, but they all did the same thing in the end: left a mark on the game that’s still shaping golfers today. That being said, if you were to put a gun to our head, we would go with Tiger as the best golfer of all time.
