First Indian-Origin FIFA World Cup Player: Who Is He?

Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid has created history and fulfilled the dream of every Indian. He became the first Indian-origin World Cup player to enter the FIFA World Cup 2026. For many years, Indian players have been sharing a common unfulfilled dream of watching their team in FIFA. While the team is still struggling, history has been made with Tahsin’s entry.

The 19-year-old player from Kerala origin became the first Indian to be named in Qatar’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His selection has spread joy in both Qatar and India.

Who is Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid?

Tahsin Jamshid is the first Indian-origin World Cup player to play for a powerhouse club in the Qatar Stars League (QSL), as a forward/winger for Al Duhail. Tahsin is considered a highly versatile player, known for his aggressive play, positioning in the box, and expert ability to dribble past defenders with both legs. He plays as a center striker or on either wing.

Although Tahsin is considered Indian with an Indian passport but also holds a Qatari mission passport, which is issued for foreign-born athletes, allowing them to take part in national or international sports to represent the nation.

Deep Roots in Kerala’s Football Heritage

As we know, Tahsin was born and raised in Doha, Qatar, and has been playing football for Qatar. But his bloodline is deeply rooted in the famous football culture of Malabar, Kerala. Football runs deeply in his blood; he is the son of Jamshid Thachankandy, a former standout footballer from Thalassery (a coastal town in Kerala’s Kannur district), and Shaima, who hails from Valapattanam.

In 1985, his father reportedly represented the Kerala sub-junior team alongside very famous players, including Jo Paul Ancheri, an Indian international. His father was later appointed at Calicut University. In 1992, Jamshid was even selected for the national camp for India, but the team didn’t come along. He suffered an injury at age 25, which ended his football career.

In 1996, Jamshid moved to Qatar for his job as an accountant, but as we say, “we leave sports, but sports don’t leave us”. The same thing happened with him, too. When Tahsin was born, he dreamed again of being the first Indian-origin World Cup player, and he took his son to the local stadiums every Friday when he was just 4 years old.

Tahsin used to sit and watch his father play along with his friends and would beg them to teach him to dribble. Looking at his son’s interest, raw speed, and natural talent, Jamshid became his very first coach and mentor.

The Rise Through Aspire Academy

After joining the sub-junior team of Al-Duhail SC in 2017, Tahsin’s journey really took off. His talent was noticed by the world-renowned Aspire Academy, Qatar’s elite sports development hub. This academy became the foundation for Tahsin’s growth, providing him with world-class training and helping shape most of Qatar’s senior players.

  • In 2021-2023, Tahsin made his debut for Qatar’s U-16 and U-17 teams. During one of his exposure tours in 2023, he even played against India. Isn’t it interesting?
  • In 2024, he made his senior professional debut in the Qatar Stars League for Al Duhail.

A Shared Dream

It was a very big thing for Jamshid to see his son named in the International squad by national coach Julen Lopetegui as the first Indian-origin World Cup player. It was a shared dream of father and son, somewhere he had imagined himself playing for the Nation.

Growing up, Tahsin watched the 2022 World Cup in Doha as a huge Cristiano Ronaldo fan. Now 19, he’s no longer just spectating. He’ll actually be playing on that big stage along with other soccer players. For the 2026 World Cup in North America, Qatar is in Group B with Switzerland, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They kick things off on June 13th in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara (San Francisco Bay Area).
