Aman Sehrawat Bags Gold For India In Zagreb Open

In a historic moment, one of India’s star wrestlers has managed to clinch a gold medal at the Zagreb Open held in Zagreb, Croatia. The 20-year-old wrestler won emphatically by defeating his Chinese opponent by way of technical superiority after scoring 11 points to his opponent’s 0. Sehrawat is ranked number 13 in the world, and he beat the number 3 guy in the world from pillar to post. The Indian left no room for error and finished the bout with 1 minute and 8 seconds still left on the clock. 

This year’s Zagreb Open marks the best performance of Sehrawat’s life. He has been going strong in this tournament. In his first match, he was trailing by 0-4 against Turkey’s Muhammet Karavus but turned the tides and defeated his opponent by 15-4. These were the only points someone scored against Aman in the whole tournament. 

Aman won the quarter-final after defeating American Richard Rhodes by 11-0 and then went on to defeat Georgian Roberti Dingashvili by the same score. Then, in the end, Aman managed to bag gold. However, Indian wrestlers will compete as neutral athletes because of the suspension placed on the Wrestling Federation of India by United World Wrestling. 

Aman Sehrawat has long been touted as India’s next big wrestling prospect, and his performance in this tournament proves that. He trains in Chhatrasal Stadium, where most of India’s Olympic medallists come from. One of his wrestling academy’s alumni, Bajrang Punia, is regarded as one of the best sports personalities in India. Now, Aman is expected to round up against the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Silver medallist and one of his idols, Ravi Dahiya, in selection trials for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held next month.
