Boxing is one of the world’s biggest sports, and some countries are known for producing some of the most dominant champions the sport has ever seen. Britain is one such country, and for some time now, its top boxing prospect has been Anthony Joshua. However, Anthony Joshua’s boxing career has not been smooth sailing, and he has had to dust himself off quite a few times. Today, we will take a look at the career of Anthony Joshua, his past fights, rise to stardom, fall from grace, and upcoming fight with another British boxing legend, Tyson Fury.
To start, we’ll cover how he got his name and his early life, then move into his professional career, personal life, and more.Ā
How AJ Got His Name
Anthony is so famous in Britain that even if you’re walking down the street for 10 minutes, you will definitely hear his name from someone passing by. He earned his popularity in the country because of his Olympic gold medal, his rise as a two-time unified heavyweight world champion, and his ability to draw record-breaking stadium crowds across the UK. Early Life: Watford, Nigeria and a Late Start
AJ was born on 15 October 1989 in Watford to British-Nigerian parents, Yeta Odusanya and Robert Joshua, both of whom were raised in Sagamu, a town in Nigeria. Boxing ran in the family: his grandfather boxed as an amateur, and his cousin Ben Ileyemi introduced him to the sport and practically started the coveted Anthony Joshua boxing career. After attending boarding school in Ikenne, Nigeria, he returned to England at 12 and grew up in Garston, where friends called him “Femi”. Football and athletics came first, and he even broke his school’s 100m record.
Turning Pro and Climbing Fast
He turned professional in October 2013 and stopped Emanuele Leo in the first round at London’s O2 Arena. In April 2016, he beat Charles Martin in two rounds to take the IBF Heavyweight title. By 2018, he held four major belts at once, making Joshua boxing’s hottest ticket in the country. Also, he won the super-heavyweight (+91kg) gold medal for Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Here we have highlighted some of the most memorable matches of AJ:Ā

Joshua Boxing’s Biggest Night: The Klitschko Fight
The best night of AJ was April 2017. Around 90,000 people packed Wembley to see the hungry young challenger face Klitschko, the long-reigning champion. It looked like it might slip away in the fifth, when Joshua was dropped and badly hurt. He found a way back, floored Klitschko in the sixth and finished it in the eleventh. It felt like a passing of the torch moment. Klitschko retired soon after, so the rematch never happened. Every Anthony Joshua fight since has been measured against that night.
Life Away From the Ring
Unlike Anthony Joshua’s boxing career, his personal life is less well known. He guards his family life, leans on a tight circle of friends and his trainer Ben Davison, and backs a foundation that supports young people through sport and education. He also loves to play table tennis. He posted a rally on Instagram just hours before the crash that almost took it all away.
The December 2025 Car Crash
On 29 December 2025, ten days after beating Paul, Joshua was travelling on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria. His Lexus LX570 hit a stationary truck. Two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, died, and Joshua survived with minor injuries. Early findings from road safety officials pointed to speeding and a failed overtake, according to the Associated Press. The news shook the boxing world.

| December 2026 (planned) | “Battle of Britain” with Tyson Fury scheduled for 11 December 2026 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. |
After the Prenga win, he said it was for Latz and Sina.

What AJ’s Story Really Teaches Us
Strip away the belts and the big stadiums, and Anthony Joshua’s boxing career is really about getting back up. He started late, rose fast and had his heart broken in the ring more than once. Then came the worst loss of all: the death of two close friends. Yet he still laced up 10oz gloves and went back to work.
That’s why people keep watching him. Whether he’s winning or hitting the canvas, you can’t look away. With a fight against Tyson Fury on the horizon, the next chapter could be his biggest yet. Whatever comes next, Joshua boxing is never boring.
