TATA IPL 2024: A Season of Record-Breaking Triumphs!

Records are meant to be broken; this statement is redefined by the teams at the ongoing TATA IPL 2024. The 17th season of the Indian Premier League is witnessing some of the most extraordinary performances, pushing the limits of what can be done in cricket. From raining sixes to record total runs, TATA IPL 2024 is all about batting domination that is proving to be a nightmare for the bowlers. Despite the rule of two bouncers per over, the bowlers are getting smashed all over the park. 

We can rightly define TATA IPL 2024 as Batter’s IPL. Records are being shattered with every match as we swiftly move towards the season’s second leg of the tournament. Here are some of the numbers that set TATA IPL 2024 apart from previous seasons. 

1. Maximum Sixes After 30 Matches 

Sixes are raining at the TATA IPL 2024, with 525 hits so far surpassing the 440 sixes hit during the first 30 matches of the previous season. This season also marks a record-breaking feat with the most sixes ever seen in the first 30 matches of any IPL season. A total of 1124 sixes were hit during the IPL 2023. Looking at the current scenario, IPL 2024 will break this record even before the Playoffs, as we can witness more than 1200 sixes to be hit during the ongoing season.

2. Record-Breaking Team Totals  

Who would have thought that the 11-year-old record of RCB, 263 vs Pune Warriors, would be broken thrice this season? Four of the five highest totals in the IPL history have been scored during this season. 287-3, 277-3, 272-7, 262-7. Sunrisers were the first to make history by scoring 277-3 against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad. However, Kolkata Knight Riders came close to this total as they scored 272-7 against Delhi Capitals in Vishakhapatnam. The Sun Risers Hyderabad rewrote history as they broke their own record for the second time in the same season. They played brilliantly, scoring 287-3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, RCB gave a good fight but ended up scoring 262-7, losing the match by 25 runs.  

3. Highest Run-Rate in Powerplay 

Teams at TATA IPL 2024 are scoring at an average run rate of 9.11 during the first 6 overs. Players have adopted an aggressive approach at the top of the order by scoring maximum runs during the field restrictions in the first 6 overs. It is also the highest-scoring powerplay season, surpassing the previous season’s run-rate record of 8.71. 

4. Highest Runs Scored in Single T20 Match 

Not only in IPL but this season of IPL is breaking records across all T20 formats. 549 and 523 are the highest runs scored ever in a T20 match. The clash between SRH and MI on 27th March witnessed an aggregate of 523 runs scored in 40 overs. This record was again broken three weeks later during the clash between RCB and SRH on 15 April, in which a total of 549 runs were scored in 40 overs (240 balls). The previous record was 469 runs scored during the clash between CSK and RR in 2010.

5. Most Sixes In A Single Innings 

TATA IPL 2024 is all about breaking records, and Sunrisers Hyderabad topped this list by hitting 22 sixes against RCB at Chinnaswamy, the most sixes in an IPL innings. The previous record was held by RCB where they hit 21 sixes against Pune Warriors in 2013.

6. Maximum Runs in First 10 Overs 

Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed 148 runs in the first 10 overs of their innings against Mumbai Indians, making a record for the most runs scored in the first 10 overs ever in IPL history. Interestingly, the previous record was held by Mumbai Indians as they scored 141 runs in the first 10 overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi in 2021. However, Kolkata Knight Riders again came close to this record as they scored 135 runs in the first 10 overs compared to Delhi Capitals at Vishakhapatnam. 

7. Most Runs Scored In Boundaries

The record-breaking list of TATA IPL 2024 does not end here, as 81 boundaries were hit during the match between SRH and RCB (43 fours and 38 sixes). A total of 400 runs were scored only in boundaries, the combined highest number of fours and sixes ever hit in a T20 match. The match between South Africa and the West Indies at Centurion also witnessed 81 boundaries (46 fours and 35 sixes). 

8. Highest Viewership For The First 10 Matches  

TATA IPL 2024 is a true value for money, as it recorded the highest viewership ever for the first 10 IPL matches, with a staggering 350 million plus aggregate viewers.  The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) claims that the total watch time for the TATA IPL 2024 increased by 20% compared to the previous year, reaching 8,028 crore minutes. This shows the craze for IPL, often referred to as India’s greatest festival.

The season is becoming more and more exciting as we reach the mid-way point of IPL 2024, with records made and broken with every match. Teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders are at the forefront of making this tournament memorable. The number game is on as we are looking for more records to be shattered by the end of the tournament.
